JBL Tune 720BT | Pure B̶a̶s̶s̶ Treble

Why So Popular?
The JBL Tune 720BT left me with one main question. Why are these headphones so popular?
I think I've found the four answers:
#1 They’re Budget
I bought my JBLs for $90, but I've seen them sell for as low as $60.
#2 They're Treble Cannons
The Tune 720BT has 40 mm drivers with a frequency response range of 20 Hz - 20 kHz. I measured these using my miniDSP EARS.
Don't be fooled by JBL's "Pure Bass" marketing. This is a treble machine. If you're a basshead, not gonna waste your time here: at this budget, the Soundcore Q30 or the Baseus Bass BH1 are definitely going to be better picks here.
Part of it is the drivers and part of it is the super small ear cups that make these effectively on-ear. That said, if you like sharp highs, prominent lower mids, and good detail, these aren't bad.
Fortunately, these are quite responsive to equalization, and there's very low distortion even at high volumes. Many budget devices fail at the latter hard.
Other than that, they're quite tinny. The clarity is good, but there isn't a very wide soundstage.
#3 They're Lightweight
I don't find the on-ear design comfortable, but others do and there's no arguing with the ultra low 220 grams of weight. The main drawback is they're entirely plastic. The headband padding is minimal, but the pleather ear cushions aren't bad.
The controls are nice and clicky as well. Volume up and down with plus and minus. Hold them to go back or forward a track. Then there's play and pause in the middle. There's no ANC, so they rely on the pleather.
There's a 3.5 mm port to use them wired. Keep in mind this disables the wireless. These have Bluetooth 5.3 with multi-point.
#4 JBL Headphones App is Decent
There's not really a lot in here, but there's a basic equalizer and a few quality of life features like Smart Audio syncing, a volume limiter, and L/R sound balance. There's a Voice Aware mode you can toggle during calls, but no transparency mode otherwise.
Verdict
If you're on a budget, don't care about bass, and want something super lightweight, the JBL Tune 720BT is a decent device. For bassheads, this is an easy pass.
